Improving the health literacy of NZ's toughest sons and daughters
With over 14,500 soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians, the New Zealand Defence Force is one of New Zealand’s largest employers. Members of the armed forces often engage in tough, arduous training to prepare them for some very real, unsafe environments. Therefore, it is comforting to know that the NZDF takes the health and safety of its members very seriously.
So when INSIGHT was charged with creating a website that aimed to help ensure the physical, mental and spiritual health of defence force members (past and present), we took the job very seriously too.
With guidance from our Health Psychologist and using the principles of good health literacy and Te Whare Tapa Wha, each page of the website spoke to the readers in a way that was culturally sensitive, not patronising and most importantly, to the point. With every single issue, the readers knew exactly where to get help or how to help themselves.
It was a very mentally heavy, but immensely rewarding, project for us to be involved in!
